USA Table Tennis announced Friday that the West Michigan Sports Commission and the city of Grand Rapids, Mich., have been awarded the 2010 U.S. Table Tennis Open scheduled for June 30-July 3. The U.S. Open, the oldest table tennis event in the United States, awards trophies and prize money in nearly 60 event divisions from 8-80 years and attracts more than 600 athletes.

The USTA announced that the Grand Rapids Wheelchair Sports Association has been awarded a Program / Project Support Grant. The grant, in the amount of $3,000, is one of 38 grants awarded by the USTA which total $234,000, to go along with seven Community Partnership Investment Grants which totaled $187,500.

The 2009 Grand Haven Beach Vault, an annual pole vaulting competition, will take place July 17-18 on the city beach of Grand Haven, MI next to the Bill Mar Restaurant. Organizers expect to reach and exceed the numbers seen in the previous year when 285 vaulters, from all over the nation and Canada, competed for an estimated crowd of 5,000 family, friends and curious beach goers.

With events ranging from statewide boxing championships to national figure skating championships, the West Michigan Sports Commission estimates 10,000 athletes, fans and spectators will visit the area and contribute as much as $1.8 million in direct spending to hotels, restaurants and businesses across Greater Grand Rapids.
