Mission
"...to promote Michigan's West Coast as the premier venue for hosting a diverse level of youth and amateur sporting events, enhancing the economy and quality of life in the region."
1st Annual Luncheon Attracts Big Crowd
The First Annual West Michigan Sports Commission Luncheon was a hot ticket in Grand Rapids on September 26th, 2007 and resulted in a huge success! Thanks to the WMSC luncheon sales committee and work of co-chairs Deb Walsh Kay and Peter Secchia, corporate tables and individual tickets were sold out within three weeks without much need for advance promotion.

The WMSC was pleased to host its inaugural luncheon in the brand new JW Marriot Hotel's International Ballroom in downtown Grand Rapids. The beautiful setting of the new hotel added to the already electric atmosphere for the afternoon. With over 800 people in attendance, Michigan State University's Men's Basketball Head Coach Tom Izzo, captivated the crowd as the luncheons guest speaker. Coach Izzo provided a casual and entertaining keynote, highlighting the many great attributes that West Michigan has to offer as a youth and amateur sports destination. He gave a positive outlook on his upcoming basketball season and complimented the great character of athletes our area produces, such as his team leader Drew Neitzel.

Kent County Commission Chair Roger Morgan welcomed the group and introduced the WMSC Board Chairman Dick Vander Molen. WMSC Chair Vander Molen spoke of the purpose and mission of the sports commission and identified the Executive Committee members and Board of Directors who will contribute to the organizations success. Vander Molen then introduced the sports commission's Executive Director Mike Guswiler, who spoke to the crowd about the exciting events that are already set to come to the area, as well as those that the commission continues to work on. Mr. Guswiler thanked the many local sports clubs, individuals and organizations in West Michigan that have helped to bring tournaments to the area and emphasized the importance of our local community's involvement to promote and host future events.

Plans are already being set for the sports commission's second annual luncheon in September 2008, with UofM Men's Basketball Coach Beilein scheduled as guest speaker.
