Mission
"...to promote Michigan's West Coast as the premier venue for hosting a diverse level of youth and amateur sporting events, enhancing the economy and quality of life in the region."

Mike Guswiler, Executive DirectorExecutive Director's Corner

As the West Michigan Sports Commission, we have had an exciting spring and are looking forward to a very busy summer of youth and amateur sporting events in our community.

April contributed to a $1 million weekend of economic impact from several sporting events occurring simultaneously in the Greater Grand Rapids area. The Forest Hills Lacrosse Club played host to the Great Lakes Lacrosse Classic, bringing together over 70 teams in 5/6th grade and 7/8th grade divisions for both boy's and girl's and wrapped up with a collegiate competition between two known area rivals MSU v. U of M. Contributing to the weekend were more than 70 high school teams competing in the GR Storm Basketball Invitational at Cornerstone University and MVP Fieldhouse and twice that number of soccer teams competing in the Lowell area at the Michigan Field Sports Complex with host Grand Rapids Alliance FC.

Excitement continued in downtown Grand Rapids May 5-10 as we hosted the National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions through a generous contribution by the Mayweather Foundation. This event, along with the 16,000+ that participated in the 5/3 River Bank Run on Saturday May 10, had an estimated economic impact of over $1.5 million dollars.

Things are not about to slow down as we look at another sold-out weekend for hotels county-wide May 30 - June 1 with over 5,000 people involved in the Michigan Junior Volleyball State Tournament at over 84 volleyball courts throughout the area and the MHSAA track finals that will bring 5,000+ competitors that same Saturday May 31 to area high schools.

We are committed to continuing this pace of youth and amateur sporting events in our community and the impact it brings to our local economy and quality of life in the region. My thanks go out to all those who have been and continue to be involved in making these events a great success! Be sure to check our website: www.WestMichiganSportsCommission.com to keep up on all the exciting events coming our way.

GO TEAM!
