This New Year brings an already full calendar for the West Michigan Sports Commission and for youth & amateur sports in general within our region.  We have a very exciting first quarter that includes this past weekend where we experienced various events like the US Airborne ‘Born to Fly” Gymnastics Invitational, GVSU Wrestling and the inaugural Grand Rapids Downtown Rail Jam. Starting Friday March 27, 2009 the Special Olympics of Michigan Basketball Finals & Skills Competition will be returning to a multiple day event that will include an opening ceremony with guest emcee Juliet Dragos from WZZM-TV, a dunk showcase featuring local athletes and conclude with a closing ceremony and athlete dance on Saturday evening March 28, 2009. Thanks to a donation by WMSC board member Peter Secchia to “Backpacks for Hungry Kids”, a local charity supported by Bill Simonson and the WBBL 1340 ‘HUGE’ Show, the West Michigan Sports Commission was able to generate increased awareness as a remote broadcast site on Thursday February 26.
