Executive Director's Corner
This New Year brings an already full calendar for the West Michigan Sports Commission and for youth & amateur sports in general within our region. We have a very exciting first quarter that includes this past weekend where we experienced various events like the US Airborne ‘Born to Fly” Gymnastics Invitational, GVSU Wrestling and the inaugural Grand Rapids Downtown Rail Jam. Special Olympics of Michigan Basketball & Skills Competition Returning To Multiple Day Event
Starting Friday March 27, 2009 the Special Olympics of Michigan Basketball Finals & Skills Competition will be returning to a multiple day event that will include an opening ceremony with guest emcee Juliet Dragos from WZZM-TV, a dunk showcase featuring local athletes and conclude with a closing ceremony and athlete dance on Saturday evening March 28, 2009. USGA Announces Site For 2010 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship
The United States Golf Association announced that Egypt Valley Country Club in Ada, Michigan will host the 2010 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship. (read more)
Citadel Station WBBL 1340 'Huge' Show Broadcasts from WMSC Offices
Thanks to a donation by WMSC board member Peter Secchia to “Backpacks for Hungry Kids”, a local charity supported by Bill Simonson and the WBBL 1340 ‘HUGE’ Show, the West Michigan Sports Commission was able to generate increased awareness as a remote broadcast site on Thursday February 26. NCAA Division I Ice Hockey Midwest Regional Championships
The West Michigan Sports Commission (WMSC), Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) and Van Andel Arena are combining resources to promote the upcoming NCAA Division I Ice Hockey Midwest Regional Championships on March 28-29, 2009. (read more)
Michigan State Criterium Championships Move to West Michigan
A recent press release announced the successful bid of bringing more awareness to the exciting sport of cycling in West Michigan by bringing the 2009 Michigan State Criterium Championships to the existing Gaslight Village Criterium race in East Grand Rapids, MI. (read more)
